FREE SEWING INSTRUCTIONS

This is the place to find free sewing instructions, and beginner-, easy-, intermediate- and advanced-sewing projects. Detailed pages are full of colorful photos, tips, techniques and sewing videos. Whether a creative hobby or a business, learning or enhancing sewing skills is a great skill to have.

DESIGNING YOUR OWN CLOTHES

Designing and sewing clothes inspired by the past. Use much of what you already own whenever possible. It's inspired by the past, it's not from the past. Let's face it, everything has been around at least a couple of times. Big skirts, mini skirts, capped sleeves, shoulder pads, animal skins, loud 70's flowers, you name it. RetroSewing is about looking into the past for ideas and inspiration for something new and current. "Vintage-Media" is also a great place to find ideas and get motivated.

USE WHAT YOU HAVE

Using what you already own is a great way to help save the planet, not to mention saving money. Recycle as much as possible. There are so many great clothes, sheets and tablecloths laying around the house, in the closet and attic that you bought because you liked them. Look at them now as a valuable source of gorgeous fabric, trim, buttons, jewels, zippers, etc.. As an outdated garment, their useful life was over. As the raw materials for your next project, they live on and on. Check out "Design Your Own Clothes" for more on that subject and how to do it. It's in the "Fashion Design" box above.

Wikipedia’s definition of, "What is Retro": Retro is a term used to describe, denote or classify culturally outdated or aged trends, modes, or fashions, from the overall postmodern past, but have since that time become functionally or superficially the norm once again. The use of "retro" style iconography and imagery interjected into post-modern art, advertising, mass media, etc. has occurred from around the time of the industrial revolution to present day.
